Yesterday, we had the pleasure of welcoming a group of pharmacy students from Mbarara to Rukararwe. Their visit was part of their academic journey to better understand the role of traditional and herbal medicine in healthcare.
During their time with us, the students were guided by our clinic doctor Ephraim, who introduced them to the principles of herbal medicine as practiced at Rukararwe. They learned how locally available medicinal plants are used to treat a variety of conditions, and how traditional knowledge can complement modern pharmaceutical approaches.
As part of the visit, the students were taken on a guided tour around the compound, where they were shown a wide variety of medicinal plants. Each plant was carefully explained, including its uses, preparation methods, and propagations.
Another part of the visit was exploring our herbal medicine clinic, where the students gained insight into how plant-based remedies are prepared, processed, and administered. From harvesting to drying and formulation, they were able to see each step involved in transforming raw plants into effective natural medicine.
The visit also included a session with the head of our tree nursery, who explained the importance of sustainable cultivation of medicinal plants. Students learned how we grow, preserve, and manage different species to ensure both environmental conservation and a reliable supply of high-quality herbal ingredients.

Throughout the day, the students showed great curiosity and engagement, asking thoughtful questions and actively participating in discussions. The exchange of knowledge between future pharmacists and experienced practitioners of herbal medicine created a meaningful learning experience for everyone involved.
We are always happy to host students and share our work, as we believe that collaboration between traditional and modern medicine is essential for building a more holistic and accessible healthcare system.
